Down in the rugged, red rock backcountry of Southern Utah lies one of the most notorious single track challenges in the state, the 5 Miles of Hell (5MOH) trail. Known for its relentless rock ledges, sharp climbs, off-camber sections, and technical “crux” obstacles, it’s the kind of ride that tests even seasoned enduro veterans.
Last spring,11-year-old, Graysen, not only took it on, he finished it.
Riding his 85cc GasGas, Graysen conquered every stretch of the infamous trail, even sessioning sections he deemed his favorite, with only a bit of help through the most technical crux section as his small wheel bike found the sandy lines a bit difficult to find the traction he needed. Watching him navigate those daunting rock gardens with determination (and a big grin) was nothing short of incredible.
If you’re familiar with 5MOH , you know that completing it at any age is an accomplishment. But doing it before you’re even a teenager? That’s next-level grit. We’ve been riding and guiding in Moab for years, and this is the youngest rider we’ve ever personally seen complete the full trail. Could he be the youngest ever? We’re not sure, but we’d love to find out!
This ride was more than just a physical challenge for him. It was a test of focus, patience, and resilience and he passed with flying colors. There were moments where the trail fought back hard, but Graysen kept his cool, kept moving, and proved to himself (and to us) what’s possible with enough determination.
We’re incredibly proud of him and wanted to share this story with our riding community. And now, we’re curious, do you know of any other young riders who’ve tackled 5 Miles of Hell or other notoriously tough trails? Have your kids done it? Or maybe you remember the first time you made it through yourself.
Drop your stories, photos, or even just your thoughts in the comments — we’d love to hear them!
Here’s to the next generation of riders pushing limits and inspiring us all!
